A Day in the Life of STC Trainer Tom
An STC Trainer does a variety of different tasks from design to delivery – it’s never a dull moment.
It’s training day and I decided to document key moments in my day, giving you an insider view of how a typical training day would look like for me.
Fresh faced, wide-eyed and bushy-tailed I find myself in Norfolk contemplating the day ahead which needs to produce results.
Today I am working with a talented, passionate team of Account Managers and it’s the final day of the Account Management Excellence programme.
Breakfast is the ideal opportunity to consider the angle of this morning’s first session. A strong, punchy and ever-so slightly humorous introduction to the day is a must at STC. It grabs the delegates’ attention, tunes them in and sets the scene. I opt for an introduction about how dating and account management have similarities – today is about re-kindling and re-energising those important customer relationships which will produce long term profit and success!
Breakfast is the ideal time also to consider the individual needs of the 8 delegates. Who will need the extra help, who will need the extra bit of Tom motivation?
It’s a rare precipitation-less morning – I walk to the client’s office. Listening to some high intensity euro-pop helps me muster the energy needed for the day ahead. An STC trainer needs high levels of energy from start to finish – if we want our delegates to be enthused and motivated, I must be enthused and motivated!
The room set up is done, workbooks are laid out carefully, the room looks and feels warm and welcoming. Most importantly, the flip charts are in good order. Flipcharts are an essential tool for us as it allows models to be drawn, ideas to be gathered and group exercises to be impactful. A flipchart gets the results needed.
And we are off!
Lunch! A sugary drink is needed to provide the energy for brain power for the afternoon. Lunch also gives me an opportunity to consider the following:
- Are there any changes which need to be made to the afternoon?
- Is the pace correct, which parts of the afternoon will need extra emphasis?
- Is the team on track to deliver results in the afternoon session
- Which of the delegates need further help and assistance?
The final session! The team needs to consolidate today’s topics, tools and themes. Above all, strong and meaningful action plans need to be written to ensure long-lasting and sustainable results.
As I work with each pair around the room (we call it floating) I am thinking about how to wrap up the day and end on a classic STC motivational high. How do I encapsulate everything we have discovered and discussed throughout the day? How do I ensure I leave the delegates feeling energised and motivated?
Time for good-byes and those all-important feedback forms. Whilst the individual delegates scores and comments are incredibly useful to gauge how the day went, what really matters to me is what happens after the day. How will the delegates use their action plans to drive their business forward? What more will they do to ensure they use the tools and techniques covered on the day?
A follow up email in a week or two will be sent. In addition, I will remind them all that they all have access to our Trainer Helpline for 6 months which will provide further support. STC are about long-lasting results for our delegates and our clients.
Home! And feeling chuffed to bits that I have made a real difference plus grateful I have had some laughs along the way.
